2024 Chinese Pandas
One of the most coveted programs in the world is the Chinese Panda Series. Introduced in gold in 1982, this collection offers five gold weights and one silver weight with a new depiction of the Giant Panda species on the coins each year. In fact, the Chinese Panda Series is the longest-running collection feature changing design elements.
The 2024 release features the familiar weights that have been in place since 2016. When the series launched in 1982, the gold collection offered 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. In 1983, a 1/20 oz gold coin was added and the first-ever silver coin was struck, though the latter would not become consistent until 1989 when the first 1 oz .999 pure silver coin was released.
As of 2016, the Chinese Mint no longer uses Troy oz as its unit of measurement. The previously mentioned coins are now produced as 30 Gram gold and silver coins, as well as 15 Gram, 8 Gram, 3 Gram, and 1 Gram gold coins.
As is tradition in this series, a new depiction of the Giant Panda is featured on the gold and silver coins. The same design appears on both versions of the coin, gold and silver, with this year’s imagery showing a mother panda with its young cub. In the design, the mother and cub are seated side-by-side with the mother extending an arm and paw around the back of the young cub.
