The coin series itself is in its 39th year of production. The gold Kangaroo has emerged as the Australian sovereign mint’s signature piece, which is no surprise given its depiction of the continent’s most famous fauna. Here are some of the highlights of the 2025 Australian Kangaroo coin series:

The Australian Kangaroo first appeared in 1989 as a replacement design for the Australian Gold Nugget, a different bullion coin. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most beloved products of the Perth Mint, and with this 2025 release, it shows no signs of slowing down.

Part of the appeal of these coins is their purity. No matter the size or metal you choose, you will receive a product minted with .9999 fine gold or .9999 fine silver. The gold coin’s purity rivals the other highest-purity coins on the market, and the silver Kangaroo’s purity actually exceeds all but a few bullion coins from other mints.

The obverse of the 2025 Kangaroo features an image of the sitting monarch of Great Britain, a nod to the historical origins of Australia as a British colony. King Charles III appears on the 2025 Kangaroo for the third time. The Dan Thorne-designed image features a left-facing bust of the king without his crown – a visage not unlike the one that appears on the Canadian Maple Leaf.

The reverse features a representation of the kangaroo. The 2025 gold versions depict two kangaroos – one hopping in the background while another suns itself on the savanna. The 2025 silver coin has a more stylized left-facing kangaroo, but it is no less identifiable as the Australian favorite.

Gold Kangaroos are available in fractional weights. You can get the standard 1 oz gold coin, but there are also 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz versions that are easier on the wallet. Silver Kangaroos are only available in 1 oz sizes.
