Britannia Gold Bars at JM Bullion

The Britannia brand and image are already popular on Royal Mint bullion coins. Now, the Royal Mint is bringing this visual concept to life with a unique image for a lineup of gold bullion bars. The new Britannia Gold Bar Series celebrates the ancient female allegory in a whole new way.

Britannia

The name “Britannia” itself is believed to have derived from the Latin term “Pretannia,” which was used by the ancient Greek historian Pytheas to describe the British Isles. The Romans adopted this term and used it to refer to their newly acquired province, which eventually became known as Britannia.

The concept of Britannia as a personification of Britain, depicted as a female warrior, emerged during the Roman period and became an enduring symbol. Britannia was often portrayed on Roman coins and later became a popular figure in British iconography, representing the island’s identity and strength.

The Britannia Design

For the obverse of the gold bars for sale in the Britannia Series, the Royal Mint offers a new depiction of the allegorical figure from Jody Clark. The right-profile bust shows Britannia clad in her common battle regalia, including the Corinthian helmet, with a trident in one hand and a Union Jack shield in the other. The background field features textured wave lines.
