Introduced in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, the most recognizable gold bullion series from Perth Mint changed its branding in 1990 to reflect a more well-known symbol of the nation. Since 1990, this collection has been known as the Australian Gold Kangaroo and it comes with new reverse depictions of the native marsupial species each year.
Each year, Perth Mint offers the Australian Gold Kangaroo in four core weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. The 1/2 oz Gold Kangaroo is the largest fractional-ounce coin in the series and boasts .9999 pure gold content with a face value of $50 (AUD). Like its counterparts, the 1/2 oz Gold Kangaroo is traditionally offered with a mintage cap and it is generally one of the lowest mintage caps alongside the 1 oz gold coin.
As mentioned above, Perth Mint changes the reverse image of the kangaroo each year. While there are four known subspecies of kangaroo in this marsupial family, the Western grey is the most well-known and more common subspecies to feature in the coin designs. These kangaroos are generally social animals that can form loose groups or mobs, especially during times of abundant food. However, they are not as gregarious as some other kangaroo species. Mobs are often composed of both males and females, and they can interact peacefully, though males might engage in displays of dominance to establish hierarchy.
