1 oz Gold Maple Leafs from JM Bullion

The largest and oldest coin in the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series is the 1 oz gold coin. Introduced in 1979, the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf has been available annually from the Royal Canadian Mint and has undergone more changes than any other individual weight in the series.

1979 Debut

When the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979, the 1 oz gold coin was the only option investors had in the series. The initial issues of the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf featured an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II from Arnold Machin that had been created, originally, for The Royal Mint in 1965. Interestingly, the coins were originally issued as .999 pure gold specimens for the first several years.

Changing Monarch Effigies

As is common with all British and Commonwealth currency, the reigning British monarch features on the obverse of Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. These effigies are routinely updated throughout an individual monarch’s reign to better reflect their age throughout their rule. For the vast majority of the Gold Maple Leaf’s existence, Queen Elizabeth II graced the obverse of the coins. The monarch effigies to feature on the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf include the following:

  • 1979-1989: Elizabeth II’s second-generation portrait from Arnold Machin featured on the obverse and captured the Queen at the age of 39.
  • 1990-2004: Her Majesty’s third-generation, and first-ever Canadian-designed, effigy featured on the obverse with the Queen depicted at the age of 64. Dora de Pedery-Hunt designed this portrait.
  • 2004-2023: The fourth-generation, and final, effigy of Her Majesty, this design from Susanna Blunt depicts the Queen at the age of 79 and is the only one of her reign to lack a crown.
  • 2024-present: The first-ever portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, this new monarch’s bust is a left-profile relief created by Steven Rosati. It depicts the King without a crown on his head.
