All Certified Gold Coins at JM Bullion

Purchasing certified gold coins is the only means of finding modern gold bullion coins with perfect visual fields and designs. Similarly, the best samples among remaining historic gold coins once used in circulation are those that have been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, Profesional Coin Grading Service, and others. When you shop for Certified Gold Coins, you will notice that American gold often dominates our collection.

Basics on Coin Certification

As you browse Certified Gold Coins at JM Bullion, you’ll notice a lot of different terms and numbers associated with coin certification. Below is a brief look at the most important details to keep an eye on:

  • NGC or PCGS – these terms refer to the two most prominent grading houses in the industry, the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
  • Mint State/Proof – these terms identify whether the certified coin in question was a Brilliant Uncirculated strike or a Proof strike.
  • 0-70 – coins are grading using the Sheldon Numeric Scale, a grading system that goes from 0 at the bottom to 70 at the top, with a 70 representing a perfect specimen.
  • First Strike/Early Release/First issue – these terms are used to identifying the timing of a coin’s certification in relation to its release from the issuing mint.
  • UCAM/DCAM – these terms refer to the visual brilliance of proof coins.

American Gold Eagle

One of the most prominent specimens you’ll find at JM Bullion are Certified Gold Eagles. The American Gold Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. It was authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, which aimed to compete with other prominent gold bullion coins on the global market, such as the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

The American Gold Eagle is issued in four denominations: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. The coins are struck in 22-karat gold, with the remainder consisting of copper and silver, making them more durable and resistant to scratching than pure gold coins. In addition to the standard bullion versions, the American Gold Eagle series has also included proof and uncirculated collector versions, which are minted with special finishes and packaging for numismatic purposes.

Pre-33 US Eagle Denominations

Prior to 1933, the United States Mint issued four denominations of gold coins as part of the Eagle series. These Pre-33 US Gold Coins consisted of $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 denominations, with the former three introduced in 1795/1796, and the latter introduced after the California Gold Rush. The details of each include:

  • The $2.50 Quarter Eagle was authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. It was the smallest denomination of gold coin issued by the United States Mint at the time of its introduction. $2.50 Quarter Eagles were minted from 1796 until 1929, with intermittent interruptions and changes in design.
  • The $5 Half Eagle was first authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. It served as a smaller denomination alternative to the $10 Gold Eagle. $5 Half Eagles were widely used in everyday transactions, making them an integral part of the American monetary system during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • The $10 Gold Eagle, also known as the Eagle, was first authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. It was the largest denomination of regular-issue gold coin authorized by the United States Mint at the time. $10 Gold Eagles were minted continuously from 1795 until 1933, with interruptions due to legislation, changing designs, and shifts in gold supply and demand.
  • The $20 Double Eagle was first authorized by the Coinage Act of 1849 in response to the California Gold Rush, which significantly increased the supply of gold in the United States. The $20 Double Eagle was the largest denomination of regular-issue gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint. It played a significant role in international trade and finance, as well as in the domestic economy.
