Officially named San Buenaventura, this California city became known as simply “Ventura” after 1891. With a population of just more than 108,000, Ventura is a relatively small community with an artistic feel and a rich history. When Franciscan missionaries on an expedition happened upon the town, they were impressed by how well laid-out that it was and how many people lived in the area. Father Serra ended up establishing the Mission San Buenaventura in 1782 that eventually became the city of Ventura.
