Gold and Silver Mints**Government Mints**Perth Mint
There are a handful of mints and refineries in this world which are known to the vast majority of precious metal investors and collectors. While savvy investors or seasoned numismatists can likely rattle off a long list of places they’ve purchased gold, silver, and platinum from, but everyone from veteran buyers to first-time shoppers knows something about the Perth Mint of Australia. Known for its annual-release gold and silver coins, the Perth Mint is home to a vast array of bullion products that include limited-run series, proof collectible products, and even gold bars for sale. Explore the vast selection of Perth Mint bullion below!
Without question, the most popular products from the Perth Mint are those which appear in its catalogs on an annual basis. Many of these coins have been issued for more than a decade without missing a beat. All of them have purity levels and weights backed by the federal government of Australia and come with brilliant new designs on the reverse side each year, adding a touch of collectible popularity to the collections as well. Below are the significant programs to be aware of when shopping Perth Mint bullion:
When you shop for these annual-release bullion coins, you’ll find that some changes have occurred recently. Both the Australian Silver Kookaburra and Australian Silver Koala feature .9999 pure silver content as of 2017.
One of the most popular limited-issue collections from the Perth Mint has been its Lunar Series offerings. Lunar Series I ran from 1996 to 2007 and featured each of the 12 animals from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. After generating immense interest among investors and collectors with its bullion and proof options, the Perth Mint restarted the program in 2008 with Lunar Series II. This collection featured all new designs from the original, with separate images used each year on the coins.
Perth Mint offers the Lunar Series II collection with gold and silver bullion options, as well as low-mintage proof coins, gilded versions, and even colorized options. Weights in both metals range from small, fractional-weight gold coins for sale to larger 1 Kilo options in both gold and silver.
On an annual basis, you’ll also find a variety of unique coin collections coming from the coining presses at Perth Mint. These programs tend to include various design options all centered on a primary theme, but are only available for a limited time. One recent example is the Perth Mint Marvel Series. This six-coin collection features some of the most popular superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as depicted in recent blockbuster films. Included in this collection through 2018 are the following designs:
There’s no end to the creativity of Perth Mint though. Back in 2015, the mint released a colorized silver coin program celebrating the Star Trek universe of writer Gene Roddenberry. The initial coins were launched in coordination with the 50th anniversary of the Original Series, and eventually featured a commanding officer from various Starfleet ships across the different television series that appeared over the course of six decades.
In addition to producing annual-release bullion coins and limited-issue collectible coins, the Perth Mint also refines investment-grade gold bullion bars. Its bar production is designed to attract investors with .9999 pure gold content and the globally recognized logo of the Perth Mint. Each bar features the swan logo of the Perth Mint on the obverse, along with the weight, purity, and metal content of the bar. The reverse includes the repeating image of a leaping kangaroo. Perth Mint gold bullion bars are available to you inside of protective packaging with assay cards to authenticate the weight, purity, and metal content.
The Perth Mint originally opened in 1899 in the city of Perth, Western Australia. The mint was the last of the three colonial branches of the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint in Australia. The Sydney Mint was the first, followed by the Melbourne Mint. Its initial responsibilities included refining gold from the gold rushes in the state of Western Australia and other territories of the day on the continent. Additionally, the Perth Mint was responsible for coining gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns for the British Empire to be used in Australia and throughout the South Pacific colonial possessions of Britain.
With the start of Australia’s federation movement in 1901, the days of the Royal Mint branch system in Australia would come to an end. The first to close was the Sydney Mint. The Perth Mint and Melbourne Mint remained operational throughout the 1900s to provide continued coinage for the country as it moved through the long federation process. In 1965, the Currency Act of 1965 changed the course of the future.
From that point onward, the Royal Australian Mint established in the new federal capital city of Canberra would be the sole sovereign mint of the nation. The Melbourne Mint closed shortly after, but the Perth Mint remained open. Following the opening of the Royal Australian Mint, the Perth Mint was handed over to the state government of Western Australia, which maintains ownership and control to this day.
