One of the most popular silver coin series from the United States Mint in the 21st century is the America the Beautiful quarter series. While investors and collectors clamor for the American Silver and Gold Eagle coins around the globe, the America the Beautiful quarter series is extremely popular in the United States.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, the United States Mint altered the reverse design on standard American circulation quarters as part of the state quarters program. The goal was to honor unique monuments, parks, forests, and events from American history reflective of each state in the Union. Following the completion of that program in 2009, the United States Mint prepared for the America the Beautiful Quarter series.
Congress approved the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, paving the way for a 5 oz silver coin honoring national parks, forests, and historic monuments in each state. With the exception of California’s Yosemite design, Arizona’s Grand Canyon design, and South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore design, all of the coins in the ATB Silver Coin series featured new reverse designs.
The 56-coin program was first launched in 2010, and features five new coin designs each year. In total, the program will represent each of the 50 states in America, the five territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa, and the District of Columbia. All coins in the series contain .999 pure silver.
As each coin has a unique design representative of an individual state or territory, the selection of an image for the reverse side is done through a consultative process. The governor or chief executive of the jurisdiction in questions collaborates with the US Department of the Interior and the US Commission of Fine Arts. The selection is reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, with the Secretary of the Treasury holding final approval for all designs.
On the obverse side of all coins is the image of President George Washington. The nation’s first Commander in Chief is featured in a left-profile portrait created in 1932 by John Flanagan, and is based upon the original 1786 bust of Washington created by sculptor William Cousins.
As the America the Beautiful coin series entered its fifth production year, the United States Mint unveiled five new coin designs. Mintage levels in 2014 reached new heights, in some cases doubling the mintage levels of coin designs from previous years. States represented in the 2014 ATB Silver coin series include:
