While the United States Mint is predominantly known for its gold, silver, and platinum bullion coins, it also produces a range of commemorative silver medals across a variety of collections. The US Mint has a rich history of medallic work, but in recent years, the variety of silver bullion medals has grown to attract more investors and collectors.

Medals vs. Coins

Silver medals from the United States Mint look like many of its popular silver bullion coins, but there are significant differences as well. The most important is the legal tender status. While Silver Eagles and other commemorative coins have a legal tender face value, silver medals have no face value and are NOT legal tender.

Both US Mint silver coins and silver medals have .999 pure silver content, but, silver medals are available in a wider range of weights. The most common options are 1 oz and 2.5 oz silver.

American Liberty Series

In 2017, the United States Mint introduced the American Liberty Series. This collection was introduced to honor the 225th anniversary of the founding of the United States Mint and its primary design focus was, at first, to delivering modern images of the female allegory of the United States: Liberty. With time, the concept evolved beyond personifications to include other interpretations of the Liberty theme. Designs released in the American Liberty Series that featured as 1 oz silver medals include:

• 2017 Liberty – the debut issue came in 2017 and captured a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty as an African-American woman, representing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the United States of America. With her hair back in a bun, Liberty wears a crown of large stars.
• 2019 Lady Liberty – the second Lady Liberty design captures another new twist on the image of Liberty, this time capturing an elegant Liberty with flowing hair and a crown of sun rays.
• 2022 Liberty – the first image of the Liberty concept to depart from the female allegory framework came in 2022. This design showed a bucking bronco shaking off its saddle as the sun rises on the horizon. The design was meant to represent the birth of American liberty as the wild mustang shakes off the yoke of British tyranny.
• 2023 Liberty – this depiction of a mighty bristlecone pine showcases the longevity of Liberty in the minds of the free. Bristlecone trees are among the oldest tree species in the world and represent the perseverance of American liberty.

United States Armed Forces Series

One of the newer silver medal programs from the United States Mint honors the branches of the United States Armed Forces. Known as the Armed Forces Series, this collection honors the six active-duty branches of the United States Armed Forces with unique designs that reflect the past and present of each branch. To date, designs are available honoring:

• The United States Navy
• The United States Marine Corps
• The United States Army
• The United States Air Force
• The United States Coast Guard
