Silver**Silver Rounds
Those new to silver collecting may believe that investments are available in either coins or bars. There is a third option, however: the silver round.
Most silver rounds look like coins. However, a silver round is the product of a private mint, not a sovereign one. Thus, their designs can range far beyond those of a true bullion coin.
Generally speaking, a silver round is a disc minted with .999 fine silver. It isn’t legal tender, and it has no numismatic value, per se, but it represents an affordable way to build up your silver portfolio.
So, let’s look a bit deeper at what silver rounds are and how you might incorporate them into your precious metals collection.
First and foremost, silver rounds are easy to store and trade. They are coin-shaped and stack well in bulk.
Furthermore, silver rounds do not typically have any numismatic value and derive their prices from their silver content alone. Thus, you don’t have to take special care about your storage of them. Don’t get cavalier with them, but they don’t require the precise conditions that rare coins or even bullion uncirculated coins do.
Third, silver rounds can really explore the space when it comes to their designs. They can pay tribute to countries, animals, the Zodiac, and pop culture icons. Really, there’s no limit to what silver rounds can have as their designs, so you can usually find rounds that mean something to you personally.
Finally, rounds generally offer lower premiums than coins. So, if you don’t have the storage space for bars but you’d like to avoid the cost and care of coins, rounds can be the right option.
Rounds come in a variety of sizes. By far, the most common size is 1 oz, as it most closely mirrors the standard size for sovereign bullion coins.
However, you can also find them minted in smaller sizes. Fractional sizes for silver rounds often include 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz versions, but there is certainly no rule against making a round in almost any size.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are multiple options for rounds that weigh more than an ounce. It’s relatively common to find them in 2 oz, 5 oz, or even 10 oz weights.
